What to Expect at Your First Consultation

If you have never hired a lawyer before, the idea of calling one can feel intimidating. It should not. Here is exactly what happens when you contact the office, what to prepare, and what comes next.

It's Free, and There's No Obligation

Initial consultations are free for most practice areas. You can schedule by calling 215-949-0888 or using the online form. Phone or in person at the Bristol office.

There is no pressure to hire me. Most people call just to understand their options and get a clear answer. That is the point.

What to Bring or Have Ready

You do not need to bring anything to get started, but the more information you can share, the more useful the conversation will be. Here is what helps depending on your situation:

Estate planning: Existing wills, trusts, and powers of attorney (if any). A rough list of your assets (real estate, retirement accounts, bank accounts, life insurance). Family information, spouse, children, anyone you want to provide for.

Probate or estate administration: The death certificate. (If you are not sure where to start, our step-by-step checklist can help.) The will (if there is one). Information about the decedent's assets, debts, and beneficiaries.

Real estate: The purchase agreement, deed, settlement statement, or any relevant correspondence. For disputes: a timeline of events and copies of communications.

Litigation: Any documents related to the dispute; contracts, emails, letters, court papers if you have been served. A brief written timeline of what happened.

Family law: Existing court orders (custody, support, PFA). Financial information if you are comfortable sharing it. A summary of your situation and what you hope to accomplish.

Any situation: Names and dates. A brief summary of what is going on. Questions you want answered.

What Happens During the Consultation

I listen. You explain your situation in your own words. No script, no intake form. Just a conversation.

I identify the legal issues. Most people do not know exactly what kind of legal problem they have. That is fine. Part of the consultation is figuring that out together.

I explain your options. What can be done, what the likely outcomes are, what the risks are, and what it would cost. You get honest answers, including "you do not need a lawyer for this" when that is the case.

I discuss fees and timeline. If you decide to move forward, you will know exactly what the fee arrangement looks like (flat fee, hourly, or contingent depending on the matter) and a realistic timeline for resolution.

What Happens After

If you want to proceed: You will receive an engagement letter that spells out the scope of work, fee arrangement, and expectations. Nothing starts until you have reviewed and signed it.

If you need time: Take it. There is no expiration on the consultation. Call back when you are ready, whether that is tomorrow or six months from now.

If it is not the right fit: I will tell you honestly. If your matter is outside my practice areas or you would be better served by a specialist, I will point you in the right direction.
